Asia Oceanic Ultimate Club Championships 2009 (Thrillah in Manila)

Summary from Hong Kong Junk Captain Michael Hsu:

Hong Kong Teams: Winners of the 2003 Manila Spirits and AOUC2007 participants, Hong Kong in 2009 had no high seeding to maintain but to prove to themselves.  In 2008, HK had 1 team with less than 10 male players and 0 (zero) female players.  In 2009, HKUPA, HK Junk, HK Star Fairies, Hong Kong (Open) creates history by:

1.      having the most HK players in an overseas tournament ever by dramatically growing to 34 players with 2 mixed teams and 1 open team.

2.      having its FIRST FULL SQUAD (w/ 2 HK lines) open team ever.

The 2 above is an accomplishment by itself.

Quoted Summary from Rick, Manila:

Special mention goes to Hong Kong Junk.  Seeded 18th, they finished 6th in the AOUCC Mixed division and equal 7th in the overall Mixed division.  They didn't just beat their seed, they destroyed it.
Hong Kong actually beat IN THE FAAAAAAACE in the AOUCC Open division, so Hong Kong finished 5th.  Not 6th.

Result in AOUCC:
AOUCC Open:
1. Link (Japan)
2. Boracay Dragons (Philippines)
3. Chukyo University Flippers (Japan)
4. CUUP (China)
5. Hong Kong
6. IN THE FAAAAAAACE (Australia)
7. Barrack's Obama (Philippines)
8. Roaches (Philippines)
9. Iligan Red Horses (Philippines)
AOUCC Mixed division:
1. Shiok (Singapore)
2. The Team Philippines (Philippines)
3. Boracay Dragons (Philippines)
4. Freakshow (Singapore)
5. Sizzle (Australia)
6. Hong Kong Junk (Hong Kong)
7. Sunken Pleasure (Philippines)
8. Disc Knights (Singapore)
9. KUNT (Korea)
10. Monster (Philippines)
11. Vudoo (Vietnam)
12. Iligan Red Horses (Philippines)
13. Hong Kong Star Fairies (Hong Kong)
Mythical 7:
1. Nica Hechanova (Team Philippines)
2. Jeffrey Rodriguez (Team Philippines)
3. Britt Mercadante (Black Flag)
4. Ness Fajardo (Black Flag)
5. Calvin Cheng (Hong Kong Junk)
6. John Damiani (Sizzle)
7. Kierin Janes (Sizzle)

Lei Out! Beach Ultimate Tournament 2009

Lots of sweat and excellent team spirit throughout the whole hot sunny day.  Inspiring team cheers and Ultimate circle of love finished every game in joy and appreciation.  More than 80 Players aged from fifteen to fifty-something had a truly great day with no serious damage; a few blisters but no broken noses for sure. Also, there were lots of respectful calls in the games that were all played in the hard-core but fun-focused manner that we can be proud of.

Six teams with a broad mix of abilities; super fast athletes, occasional players taking a break from their desk-bound day jobs, newbies and teenagers dashing like wind all over the beach.

Spectacular layout catches... unbelievable layout defense.... feats to get your blood pumping just by watching in every single match.... skying battles took your breath at the Endzone.....  This is Ultimate!

Thanks to the captains for their leadership bringing all the players to the games with great performances and sportsmanship and giving us the most fun and competitive beach Ultimate tournament.

Congratulation to the Champion team Snow White (White) with great consistency and co-operation that defeated the most experienced team The Dirty Old Men (Blue) in a thrilling final.

Snow White (White) - Captain Super Hsu (Michael Hsu)

Lobsters (Pink) - Captain Calvin Cheng

Dirty old men (Blue) – Captain Jake Ulick

Heatstroke (Red) Captain Rob Adams

Big Stupid Sunglasses (Yellow) – Captain Paul Coffey

Melange (Orange) – Captain Brian Marterer

We attracted some new recruits to HK Ultimate and hopefully some of our more recent members have been thoroughly bitten by the Ultimate bug and are now totally addicted. We sincerely hope that they will keep playing, join our league and add their energy to the growing force that is HKUPA.

Thanks to everyone who helped organize, set-up and pack-away, particularly;

Sjoerd Hoekstra, Kat Mok and Philip Mok (setting up the field before players woke).

Kelvin Mulvey, Jake Anderson taking care of the Beverage supply.

Neil Gysel (idea of design and game scheduling/timekeeping)

Paul Coffey setting up the webpage for registration.

Wilkie Chu for the connection to D Deck.

Alex Chapman for team selecting, meeting and score sheet.

Marcus for arranging the lunch and dinner.

Player Development / Competitive Programme / HKUPA tournament teams

We are pleased to announce that our new structure of Player Development Program is formed.
As our club membership is quite transient it is very important that we recruit and retain as many players as we can.
Recruitment we are looking at separately (and will make some announcement shortly)
Retention - we will improve our retention of players new & old by providing a clearer path for improvement.  We will continue to have regular, structured training sessions for our more seasoned players.  We will also provide a structured and focussed beginner development programme - we will particularly pay attention to the need for more training conducted in Cantonese language which we expect will improve the numbers of local players and give HKUPA greater depth and flexibility .
It is the honor of HKUPA to appoint:
Mr Robert Adams as the Executive Director of Beginner Development and
Mr Michael Hsu as the Executive Director of Advanced Training & Development (AKA the Competitive Programme).
The Club Secretary Alex Chapman will monitor the new structure and help Rob and Hsu to work out any initial difficulties.  With the strong leadership and well organized training program we expecting better level of Ultimate in our local society to achieve our long term development plan.
Contact Alex Chapman (mob) 9186 4069  if you have any ideas to contribute

WEEKENDS

Occasional beach Ultimate outings will be arranged, usually on Saturdays -  REGISTER on this website to receive e-mails with details - Beach Ultimate is FREE and all are welcome.

Sundays (Saturdays starting September 12th replaces Sundays) will be at Tai Hang Tung from 3pm to 6pm as usual.  PLEASE BRING BOTH RED & WHITE SHIRTS to play in (not dark & white) - this will help to improve our image and standing as a club and as a sport.  We are having trouble booking the fields because the management doesn't think we are playing a real sport or are anything more than an informal gathering of people playing "catch".  If we look more organised, then this will create a better image, and maybe we'll get a bit more consideration from the management at the fields (and maybe people will stop walking across the fields during our games). Your efforts in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Visitors and new players are welcome on Sundays - Non- members fee is $50 ($20 for students).

MEMBERSHIP FEES

Annual Fees will remain HK$500 (HK$250 for students)

As we are half-way through the year , new members pay HK$250 (HK$120) for the remainder of 2009.

Please pay Alex Chapman or Carlene Chan
