** IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT **
The HKUPA Tournament has secured great sponsorship and you'll be enjoying great food at the fields thanks to Subway. Get along to their branches in Central (on the escalators) or Wanchai (on Jaffe Rd) and buy a sandwich to thank them for their support.
** LEAGUE REPORT **
The 2008 Autumnal League stands delicately poised after Round 5 with 3 teams having won 2 games each, and even the bottom placed team just a few points shy of top spot on the table. A hearty round of congratulations to the captains and all players in the league who have been doing a fantastic job of making your reporters weekly musings that much more interesting.
The HKUPA saw yet another first this past week with 2 rounds of league played in the space of 24 hours. Here's a quick summary of how it all went down.
Tuesday, 7th October - Round 4
Playing at Tai Hang Tung, Red(iculous) announced their arrival as a mature team with a solid victory over the previously undefeated Blue Smurfs. Boasting an impressive line-up with the addition of the Latino Love-machine Roberto, they were just too good for the Smurfs and coasted to a 13-9 victory.
On the other field, Black Rain were left to regret their own mistakes as some silly turnovers, missed catches and less-than-perfect defense allowed White to roll in a 12-7 victory. To their credit, the White team - who are going by the name Clever Underwear Manipulation for this week at least, were solid (and gracious!) in victory.
Wednesday, 8th October - Round 5
And so it was that about 80 people woke up on Wednesday morning pinching themselves to make sure it was true - YES, we were going to get 2 sensational games of Ultimate within 24 hours in Hong Kong. Winner!
Congratulations first and foremost to Black Rain, who regrouped from their lackluster performance on Tuesday to deliver the Blue Smurfs their second defeat in as many days. Superbly captained by Grant, the fumbles and foibles of the day before were a distant memory as the boys and girls in dark notched up their best victory of the season - a morale-boosting and confidence-giving 13-9 triumph. The Blue Smurfs are now desperately in need of a win before we take the mid-season break and prepare for the Hong Kong tournament.
On Field Two, Team White continued their strong form in a very competitive game with Red(iculous). The final score-line (10-8 to White) was a good indicator of the game. Points were hard to come by, the play was competitive, but White just had the edge.
Round 6 of Autumnal league happens next Wednesday, 15th of October at the So Kon Po Sports Ground in Causeway Bay. And don't forget that the following week there is NO LEAGUE GAME - we'll take a mid-season break and clear the fields so that your tournament teams can get ready to kick butt at the Pan-Asia tournament on 25-26 October!
